Shame is complex in that it can come from many different places, and shows up differently for people.   Shame can be explicit, like if families always say things like, “you’re so difficult all the time” “you’re too much” “why can’t you be more like Jimmy”   Or it can be implicit, like things at home or in friend groups that just aren’t talked about. Emotions like sadness or anger, relationship problems, conflict. When we notice things are actively avoided, we start to wonder, “is this ok to feel/talk about?”   I heard a quote from Robert Downey Jr. once talking about his past issues with addiction, and how he learned to “hug the cactus”. He recognized the importance of embracing all the different parts of ourselves, even the prickly parts we’ve hidden away or would prefer not to have. Self-compassion is another component of healing shame, but tends to come later in the process. It’s hard to force that love and understanding on ourselves when our critical/shaming parts are so strong.   Working with our shame is no small task, but there are steps we can take to chip away at it.   #psychologist #shame #selflove #selfacceptance #emotionalhealing
