What is the Jev architecture, and how does it work? Released by Typesafe AI, Jev is what they refer to as a system 1 model, and it doesn’t actually generate text. It takes structured data (such as text) as input, and returns an output distribution over a primitive you define before inference. But what is system 1, and what are primitives? For over 10 years, ML research has separated 2 modes of reasoning. - System 1 models maps an input to an answer quickly, such as a classifier or a policy network. - System 2 models is what LLM research has largely focused on, using step-by-step reasoning to solve high-impact tasks. Models like GPT-6 Astra or Fable 5.1 are system 2. Jev is efficient since it shrinks its output space by using logic primitives. While LLMs have dictionary sizes of over 100,000 tokens, Jev is capped at 255 options. Jev takes an input state and a list of questions similar to heuristic rules, that fall into 3 primitives: 1. A Choice picks from up to 255 options 2. A Score places the input on 2 to 10 ordered levels 3. A Noul gives the probability that a yes-or-no statement is true. Jev uses a parallel sampler to produce outputs for all questions at once (which allows it to answers in 70 to 500ms), while autoregressive LLMs produce one token at a time. Teams already use LLMs for lots of fast, System 1 decisions. Take a refund request. You send the customer’s request, their transactions, and a refund policy in one call. You use a Noul for whether a refund was requested and if there’s a duplicate charge, and a Choice for which team should handle it. Your application can then decide what happens next. Since the task is fairly simple, using a system 1 model like Jev is cheaper and responds faster. What’s nice is that uncertain outputs can be sent to a human or a system 2 model for further reasoning. Check the link in our bio for the easiest way to keep up with research.
