My brother has a stutter. Didn’t even realize until about 10 years ago. He’s the smartest person I know. I’m 43 by an he way. He’s an engineer.

As an autistic person, it takes a lot to control my echolalia when people stutter or speak in a very interesting way. Of course I DO control it now as an adult. We’d just be two people working hard to communicate with each other & hey, that’s ok 👍🏽

I wouldn’t feel comfortable keeping eye contact, I would totally feel that this could make you uncomfortable, but good to know that it doesn’t and it helps you!❤️

As a nurse this is great education for me. I tend to finish patients sentences because I can tell their frustration sometimes so I feel like I’m helping or wanting them to know I understand what they are trying to articulate. Would you say the best thing for me to do in the future is to just be patient and wait for them to finish their sentence?

Hey Travis! Question for you - in addition to maintaining eye contact, is there anything else that people can do to reassure you and not to worry about rushing? Such as smiling or nodding? One time I said to someone “take your time” and they smiled and said thank you, but now I’m not sure if speaking/interrupting was helpful or demeaning. Appreciate you educating all of us.
