Mysterious, self-destructive, imperfect, rebellious, with a dark past: THAT is what a Byronic hero is. Think of: Heathcliff, Mr Rochester, Anakin Skywalker, Severus Snape, Guts, Shadow the Hedgehog… As I discussed in a recent video, this concept derives from the poetry of Lord Byron — a mad, bad (and dangerous to know) Romantic poet from the early 19thC. He crystallised the archetype of the literary bad boy in his life and poetry. Many of you asked me whether women could be Byronic. My answer is that, while traditionally the term ‘Byronic’ is usually applied only to male characters, there are absolutely examples of female characters with these same characteristics — Catherine Earnshaw, Eustacia Vye, Cersei Lannister, for instance. In many ways, Byronic heroines feel even more subversive than their male counterparts. Because many of their qualities are things that society deemed less acceptable for women, than for men.
