Older teens are supposed to be doing something complicated: becoming increasingly independent without suddenly having to know how to do everything. Some ways we can support that transition as parents: 1. Scaffold, then step back. Teach → do together → supervise → let them own it. 2. Give increasing responsibility before they leave home. Money, appointments, transportation, schedules, household responsibilities, problem-solving. 3. Let them experience natural consequences. You don’t have to rescue them, but you also don’t need to manufacture hardship to teach a lesson. 4. Normalize asking for help. Independence isn’t never needing anyone. Knowing when and how to seek guidance is an adult skill. 5. Let them make low-stakes mistakes. Competence comes from actually doing 💩 imperfectly. 6. Offer guidance without taking over. Help them think through a problem rather than immediately solving it. 7. Respect growing autonomy and privacy. Increasing independence should come with increasing dignity. 8. Stay emotionally available. Separation and connection are not opposites. The goal isn’t to raise a kid who turns 18 and suddenly doesn’t need you ever again.
