Science has become more advanced and complex, making it very difficult for one person to delve deeply into it alone and discover something new. Therefore, most discoveries nowadays are made collaboratively. In the past, science was not as profound, and many things could be discovered by a single individual. Now, however, that is no longer the case.

We do still have scientists like that. Big difference is when something new is discovered, it isn't one person who did it but the collaboration between many. Scientists now also don't get as much individual fame as before.
