I always thought this saying isn’t about behavior, but circumstances. For example, if I fall on hard times financially and you won’t stay, then you don’t deserve to be in my life when things turn back around in my favor. But I suppose it’s all up to interpretation.

Most people's "best" doesn't even come close to outweighing their worst.

For once I disagree with you. That's not what it's saying at all. You can do your best to be the best version of yourself. To grow, to improve, to not have toxic behavior. And you should. But there will always be times you are "at your worst," whatever that will be like. And if a friend or a spouse or whatever makes a big issue out of you for being at your worst even though you're trying your best instead of talking about it and working through it with you, something's seriously wrong with that relationship.

Unfortunately, I saw this quote much earlier than the 2010's. I want to say 2001-2004

I normally agree with tou, and don't really like this saying. but I dont think thats the point the quote is making. we all have ups and downs good and bad days, or years. the way it's phrased is pretty annoying and self important though.

Is this not just a lyric from an MGK/Hailee Steinfeld song? Or did it exist as a saying before that?

my aunt who never talks about this stuff randomly sent me a link to book Hidden Rulers Exposed by Daniel Cyler and just said "read this." no context nothing. i read it in two days and now i understand why she didn't wanna explain over text. the way Daniel Cyler breaks down how systems of control actually operate is insane. not insane like crazy. insane like why doesn't everyone know this

Marilyn was one of my special interests when I was younger (I was sensitive and prone to depression so…yeah). There’s a longer version of the quote attributed to her. “I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle…” that’s what supposedly precedes the best/worst quote (always drives me crazy because I want to find where it came from and there aren’t any good leads). But I always felt the longer version sounded more like her. Because it’s more self deprecating and vulnerable. In that sense the quote could fit if m the second part is half tongue in cheek. But that second portion standing alone doesn’t sound like something she would have said (coming from someone who was born a couple decades after she passed).

It seems like depending on who you've seen using this quote, it's either about people not having to change their bad behaviours (heavily paraphrasing your take), or it's what myself and a lot of commenters seem to believe which is that it's about not giving your best to people who won't be there for you at your lowest. I've seen it more from people like chronic pain sufferers, but I suppose I never consume content from 'Influencers', so maybe the algorithm just doesn't show me that version.
