Crops are adapted to these conditions: sesame, groundnut, cotton, and millets, all capable of withstanding periods of drought. Irrigation is often used as a complement when rainfall is not sufficient. In this field, water is distributed through surface gravity irrigation. It is brought in from an entry point, often a canal or a pump, and then flows through furrows dug between the rows. The distribution happens directly at soil level. The farmer adjusts the path of the water by slightly modifying the furrows or small ridges of earth as the water moves. This type of irrigation, widely used in many agricultural regions around the world, relies on continuous observation: slope, infiltration, and flow speed. It allows water to be managed at a very fine scale, without complex equipment.
