But because anything unfamiliar tends to get filtered through fear before it gets filtered through respect. So it comes out sideways. A little joke at dinner. A weird comment about “stability.” A “just wondering” question that somehow feels like an accusation in khakis. And suddenly you’re not enjoying your mashed potatoes… you’re defending your entire future to people who have never once had your exact calling on their chest. I’ve learned something important here: Defending usually makes you feel smaller. Defining makes you feel steadier. There’s a difference between someone asking because they care… and someone repeatedly poking at the same dream like it’s a delusion they’re hoping you’ll grow out of. Those are not the same conversation. And not everyone gets the same access. Some people get context. Some people get a shorter answer. Some people get a boundary. And a few people get a subject change with haste. Because “I’m worried about you” can be loving… but it can also become a socially acceptable way to keep dragging doubt across your tablecloth. So here’s the reminder I wish more business owners heard: You do not need to turn your life into a courtroom every holiday. You are allowed to say: This is a business. I’m building it intentionally. I’m not asking you to fully understand it. I am asking you to respect it. That’s not rude. That’s emotional home security.
