"Let It Be" is one of The Beatles' most famous songs, written by Paul McCartney (credited Lennon–McCartney) and released in March 1970 as a single, as well as the title track of the album Let It Be. What the song is about Paul McCartney wrote it during a period when the band was effectively falling apart and he was under intense stress. He dreamed of his mother, Mary McCartney, who died of cancer when he was 14. In the dream, she told him: "It will be alright, let it be." That phrase became the chorus. Interestingly, the song also has a religious subtext — the image of "Mother Mary," which is often interpreted in two ways: both as the Virgin Mary and as Paul's mother. Musical history · Recording took place in January 1969 during the sessions for the Get Back project (which later became Let It Be). · Billy Preston played on the recording — a keyboardist who was effectively the "fifth Beatle" during that period. · George Harrison recorded the famous guitar solo. · Phil Spector later added orchestra, choir, and effects for the album version, which McCartney disliked. In 2003, the Let It Be... Naked version was released without Spector's treatment. · John Lennon reportedly disliked the song, calling it "sweet," but still rated its commercial potential highly. Significance The song became an anthem of humility, acceptance, and hope. It was performed: · at the 2012 London Olympics (by McCartney); · at The Concert for New York City after 9/11; · at many charity and memorial events. In 1971, the song won a Grammy for Best Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
