yeah, as a Console player, i will just say that the Steam controller is a big no if it moves when I move the controller. but if you are a pc player i understand why you have problems with the normal controller since its all about getting used to moving your thumb slowly more controlled, just like when you learn how to use a clutch when driving

as someone who has played fps games with controller for 25+ years, we aim differently, on console I always aim up and down with precision. left and right I aim in the general direction and I fine adjust by strafing.

Your sensitivity seems really low on the Xbox controller. The only advantage I can see with the touch pad is no dead zone. Turning feels natural for me but it takes a few milliseconds to get the stick from turning left to turning right, gotta get to the centre first. track pad would eliminate that
