You have to understand- the parent child relationship changes when the child becomes an adult. As it should. Sometimes loving our child unconditionally is parallel to also having our own boundaries. Relationships as adults has to have balance. We will always be mom and dad but our kids, once adults, need to relate to us on an adult level.

Unconditional love does not equal unconditional tolerance and that is the issue.

The daughter said her mom apologized years ago . Good job for the mom protecting herself

Love can be unconditional, but relationships still have to evolve over time. Once both are adults, it becomes about mutual respect, communication, and effort — not a permanent giver/receiver dynamic

Do you honestly think that bc the mother set a boundary that she doesn't love her daughter? I went NC with my mother. That doesn't mean that I didn't and don't love her. I did absolutely love her. I loved my grandmother. But I could not bear the heartache and the manipulation and the trust breaking ghat was happening any longer. Unconditional love doesn't mean sticking around to be berated, belittled, and treated like garbage.

They always love. You are talking about unconditional approval and agreement on every single thing

I am no contact with my mom and we are both no contact with my brother. Both our choice. And yet as someone who has that dynamic, it is still incredibly rare, a very VERY specific circumstance, and yet I still agree with Kate that parents should love their kids unconditionally

Honestly, I agree wholeheartedly, especially after becoming a mother myself

Fair. But when a child goes NC the parent then grieves that child loss. As if that child had died. They’ve learned to live their life without them and find joy again. I don’t think the parent ever stopped loving the child. Not ever. That doesn’t mean they are obligated to open their hearts for possible heartbreak a second time.

You need to let go of your expectancy as an adult from ur childhood

I also expected it, never got it but am giving it to my kids. And I'm teaching my kids that if I become toxic or they feel hurt by me, they're not forced to have a relationship with me. Their peace is more valuable.

I feel like it depends on the scenario, right? Some parents who’re setting a bottom line for addiction intervention etc. type behaviors, sure. Regardless, both sides of no-contact should come with a lot of forethought. The assumption here is that the choice to go no-contact is sudden / irreversible and/or without conditions for contact. No?

I am 60, no contact with my "mother", after she legally attested that I was not her child (that's what it took). I was never loved or wanted.
I could never not have a relationship with my children!

FYI my mom gave me the silent treatment so she cut contact right? She confirmed what I always felt, conditional love.

When utilized appropriately, No Contact isn’t even about a lack of love. We can love someone with our whole heart and still understand that they’re toxic for us. One of the hardest things a person can do is shut out someone they love deeply because the relationship is harmful to us.

The parent child relationship is the one relationship in life where it’s a 1-way street. Kids need to focus on their life, not looking back and caretaking their parents life

As a parent, I will spend my life doing everything in my power making sure to maintain a good relationship with my child. I will never understand the tit for tat behavior from a parent

I agree, my parents showed conditional love - yes, I had complex trauma & ADHD (now know!) and I was emotionally dysregulated. I oscillated from compliant and people pleasing to melt downs - I was hard work during these meltdowns, I am accountable for this. Instead of healthy boundaries, which are important, in the middle of a crisis they chose ostracisation & enabling of a toxic sibling. Psychotherapy taught me I had been the container for family dysfunction and love was only through compliance. I use this to parent in a completely different way now as I was following a similar path. Proud cycle breaker here 🥰
