I introduce the student assigned to me to the patient. I say “I am first and last name, I am the supervising nurse anesthetist assigned to do your anesthesia. My job is to keep you safe first and then comfortable. this is first and last name she is a doctoral student at xyz university studying to become a nurse anesthetist like me. She will complete your preop evaluation and explain the anesthesia to you and then her and I will discuss and I will come back to answer any questions or clarify any points”

Since I’ve changed my wording to “Hi, I’m Rachel! I’m a nurse getting my doctorate in nurse anesthesia”, I get a lot less confused looks and even kudos from the patients 😂❤️

I jump right in with “I’m a registered nurse studying to be a nurse anesthetist (or I say a nurse who gives anesthesia). I’ll be working with your crna and your anesthesiologist today.” I feel like saying I’m an RN right away helps a little! And omg the whole thing is awkward af.

These days I just say “Hi I’m Gillian, I’m a nurse anesthesia student, I’ll be working with your anesthesia team this morning” and most people don’t ask me about the student part but if they do I elaborate that I used to be an ICU nurse and I’m training in anesthesia. CRNA school as a whole is an awkward experience on a daily basis.

My main training site has ”Nurse Anesthesia Resident” on our badge and that bypasses all of that convo 😅💀 will be interesting to see my next facility they used SRNA.

Patients don't know what a cRNA is and if you say you're a student, they worry that you're going to be the one doing the anesthesia maybe for the first time ever ... even if it's supervised ...their anxiety go through the roof!
