I recommend Easy German’s app, Seedlang! It incorporates most of the above techniques into convenient and easy to boot up, Duolingo style lessons, but without the Duolingo shortfalls.

I started with Duo and a German Live Creator here. when I finished their A2 content, I added watching Bluey in German. after 17 months of Duo, I went to Europe and was able to communicate pretty easily in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany and Austria, and locals replied to me in German. by the time I finished the available Duo content, I was able to read Die Verwandlung by Kafka in the original German. I read the audio and text at the same time and understood it pretty well.

I started with Duo then added Airlearn and Bussu. Using all 3 helped fill in what the other two were missing. But, Duo for some reason just rubbed me the wrong way and I stopped using it for a few months. I don't care about leaderboards, leagues, hearts or coins, I just want a straight forward platform to learn from.

I only need duolingo becuase I am A1 and when I try to watch German stuff I cant understand anything so there's no point, but im going to stop using it when I understand more words

Apps helped me learn vocabulary at the beginning, which enabled me to read more, which taught me grammar. Podcasts and YouTube helped with listening. Speaking and writing are where you’re on your own without a tutor or fluent partner.

Duolinguo is useful to get a taste of a language, but for anything beyond A2 there are better options
