Charlie’s didn’t even think it was that serious initially, it wasn’t until he saw that he was being socially affected is why he took it a lot more seriously. His worst nightmare is being exposed, which is why he didn’t even have a definitive answer for what the worst thing he ever did was *spoilers* (although I also believe that was because the worst thing he ever did was what he did before and after the wedding). To add on this is also why he projected his feelings of exposure onto that lady and in turn exposing her.
