Work continues on the 1926 Louisville & Nashville Little Woody caboose. The pine framing told its own story—nearly a century of service had left the wood decayed, soft, and failing. The restoration began with careful assessment, then removed the 100-year-old compromised pine sections section by section to preserve every surviving edge, nail pattern, and original profile where possible. Loose, crumbling material was cleared first by hand, followed by controlled surface prep to reveal sound substrate beneath the old deterioration. Needle scaling brought the remaining timber and bonded grime into sharp focus, lifting embedded oxidation and aged deposits without stripping away what still held. Next, wire wheeling smoothed the work areas and feathered the remaining texture, preparing a stable surface for adhesion. Before any new build-up, the team treated the frame with a protective primer. The primer was applied to seal what needle scaling and wire wheeling uncovered, helping prevent further deterioration and keeping moisture and contaminants from re-entering the wood fibers. Only once the surface was clean, stable, and sealed did the restoration move forward—ready for replacement wood to match original dimensions and restore structural confidence while honoring the caboose’s heritage.#preservation #restoration #railroad #caboose #History
