Arborist here. That is not true. growth is not balanced or simultaneous in any meaningful way. In species like mangroves, root development can dominate while canopy growth is minimal, especially in harsh, waterlogged conditions. Coast Redwood grow extremely tall while relying on shallow, lateral root systems, showing vertical growth can far outpace root depth. Urban trees often expand their canopy while root growth is restricted or deflected by pavement, meaning one system adapts while the other is constrained. In drought conditions, trees may prioritize root expansion over canopy growth to chase water, effectively pausing upward growth. Wind-exposed trees can also grow asymmetrically, reinforcing roots on one side while the canopy leans the other way. In practice, trees allocate growth unevenly based on environment, not as a synchronized two-direction process.
