Welcome to Episode 5 of Chatsworth From Above. Our journey through the different units of Chatsworth continues as we explore Unit 5, better known as Croftdene. But where did the name Croftdene come from? Who were some of the families who first made Unit 5 home? And how did a numbered housing development gradually become the community generations of people know today? The name itself gives us a clue to the landscape. Historical research into the naming of Chatsworth's different areas describes Croftdene as an enclosed piece of arable land situated within a deep, narrow wooded valley. From above, with its slopes, valleys and residential areas following the contours of the landscape, that description begins to make sense. But this episode goes much deeper than the name. Chatsworth was developed during apartheid and became home to Indian families displaced under racial segregation and the Group Areas system. Over time, its numbered units developed their own names, institutions and community identities. Croftdene became Unit 5 within that story. In this episode, we explore Croftdene's history, education, sporting culture, community life and its tradition of residents organising around issues affecting their neighbourhood. Historical records show that the Croftdene Residents Association was among the grassroots civic organisations active during the growth of community politics in Chatsworth around the late 1970s and early 1980s. We also take an honest look at some of the social and safety challenges faced by communities such as Croftdene today, while recognising that these challenges should never be allowed to define an entire neighbourhood. Because Chatsworth From Above isn't only about beautiful drone footage. It's about preserving history. It's about documenting communities.
