@realmomnicole: Life with a neurodivergent child is unpredictable in ways that I would have never imagined. One day he's running up and down the stairs, the next day he terrified. #autism #anxiety #autismawareness
He may be experiencing some discomfort in his body that is causing him pain. We always check the physical first and yes, maybe something happened. He looks very very afraid but you can’t do anything about that now except comfort him and give him the time he needs.💜💜

If the fear is new and no event occurred you might want to get his ear checked for infection. Our vestibular system is governed by systems in our ears that can be effected by an infection or vertigo can be addressed by an OT. It’s so had when they can’t tell us 🫂 momma

It could be a sensory thing. My son does this too, only with crawling.

I dont know if its his thing but I would always slip on carpeted stairs. especially if I was wearing socks I hate them. I have fallen going up the stairs as well.

I know it’s not the right choice for everyone but my child really benefited from medically treating his anxiety. Exposure and therapy helped but, for him, it was brain chemistry preventing him from making much progress.

I am also spicy and I have a real fear of stairs. My whole life I have counted stairs. I take meds to regulate now but for a long time I just did them full panic. Sometimes singing will get my mind off the scary. I know he’s non verbal. Can you play his favorite song? Or encourage him to hum. I hum to regulate so it takes my mind off the scary thoughts of tumbling down.

get his eyes checked. He might be experiencing binocular vision disorder which can greatly effect spatial awareness

Sorry to hear this; I know the chairlifts are expensive, but maybe that would help.

Does he get OT? He may be experiencing a lack of bodily awareness and he doesn’t feel confident with the motor planning required for steps.

Maybe he just felt that feeling of falling down but didn’t and it was enough to scare him. We all know that scary feeling when we skip a step it is a scary experience that could cause paranoia with stairs.

I hope this passes for him, he looks so scared. you're doing great!
I'm a mom with autistic kids, I'm no expert, but I can brainstorm. If not an accident with the stairs, maybe: an inner ear issue, he could have seen a severe fall on TV or while out, a vivid dream, medication disrupting his sense of balance.
there could be a way to make sitting step-by-step down and up a fun activity, reframe the stairs till he's comfortable again.

I would check his eyes to make sure that he’s seeing OK, and the ears to make sure there’s not some kind of tin tinnitus is going on

Sorry he's going through that. ♥️A good redirection is to activate another sense, or 3 simultaneously.
For example:
1. Have a particular song that you play as he goes up and down.
2. Mist a smell he likes in the stairway, before you introduce him to the stairs.
3. I have found that using 3 senses as works works the best. For example
Mist (Mist bottlecect.) a smell he likes
Play music he likes
AND give a snack or food item, to preoccupied his sense of taste.
In my experience, the brain cannot be stuck in fear, if you use three senses to hijack it.
Hope you find solutions.
