When Mom asks why I’ve become so distant and cold, I don’t really know how to explain that it’s because I’m tired of being hurt by the little things that slowly became bigger wounds—being shouted at over small mistakes, hearing harsh words when I was already struggling, and feeling like my feelings never mattered enough to be understood. I know I may seem quiet, distant, or uncaring now, but sometimes I’m only like this because I learned to stay silent whenever I’m hurt, because every time I tried to get closer, another painful word or angry moment made me pull myself back even more, and after hearing those things again and again, I started keeping my feelings to myself because I’m scared that opening up will only give me another reason to cry.
