Ok. So that’s cool and all. But look into the “detour” that monarch butterflies take over Lake Superior. Scientists suspect that there is a genetic memory in monarchs of a large mountain range that ‘may have existed’ millennia ago in that region which they’re still avoiding.

You are referring to the "Super Generation.” Or the fourth generation of Monarchs. This is the final generation born in late summer or early fall. Instead of mating immediately, they enter a state called reproductive diapause, which puts their biological aging on hold. This allows them to live for 8 to 9 months, giving them enough time to migrate thousands of miles to Mexico or California, survive the winter, and fly back north in the spring to start the cycle again. We see them in Carmel from time to time but not in the numbers from even a decade ago.

The Thinking Minnesotan :
There has been a study in the last few months that proves monarch butterflies actually retain the data and memories of previous generations in their genetic code. They believe it’s somehow in the fluids that they create. Look it up. It’s brand new.

when you say they migrate to an area the size of a few football fields... what size area are they migrating from?

And if I remember that species of monarch avoids this one area, during migration, where there used to be a mountain that doesn’t exist anymore. I can’t remember where in the US it is, but I think it might be this butterfly.

Do hummingbirds next! So many breeds and they travel thousands of miles each year. Amazing, territorial creatures. Put out a feeder and watch the show.
