@softenvelope: Part 2. Hyangnang 향낭 | Scent Pouches around the world In 1123 CE, a Song dynasty official traveling to Goryeo (present day Korea) wrote down what he saw: noblewomen wearing gold fragrant pouches, deliberate about making sure people noticed. The hyangnang ran across every social level; the same object, readable differently in gold or silk depending on who wore it. Some were filled with herb cakes and sealed permanently, never meant to be opened. The fragrance was present as a fact of the object, not only as something you released. Simply carrying it, visibly, was an important aspect to ‘wearing’ the scent. Images of hyangnang from the National Palace Museum of Korea, the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture ***in the video, I said 1223CE, but 1123CE is the correct year!! #fragrancetok #perfumetok #hyangnang #향낭 #scentpouch
