SWE here. The rebranding is just a way to combine roles to reduce headcount. Software dev + sales = GTM engineer. Dev + product manager = product engineer. Non-tech role + AI subscription = ___ engineer. There is no status. Just more work.

There a difference between Marketing and GTM which is much more of a mix of sale and tech then Marketing but they are similar alright.

Point #2 hit nail on head. Marketing isn’t just building a canva template. Need to understand how use Ads, Reporting, creative variation with AI, and building sites on the fly or NGMI. That’s the engineering part.

I’d argue that because everyone is using someone else’s foundational models and tech, that the only real advantage they can obtain is customer lock-in. It’s not that these jobs are more valuable over the long-term, it’s just that there is a short-term rush and grab on accounts and design wins. Be ready for the pull back.
