Back in the 1980s, their founder Liu Han-Chieh and his team in Taichung experimented by adding chewy tapioca pearls (a popular local snack) into iced milk tea. What started as a simple test in 1986 officially became “bubble tea” in 1987 and the rest is history. Trivia time: • The “bubble” in bubble tea doesn’t refer to the pearls, it actually comes from the foam created when the tea is shaken. • It was first served as a “secret menu” drink before becoming a nationwide hit. • While Chun Shui Tang is widely credited as the inventor, another tea shop in Taiwan also claims the title, making it one of the biggest (and tastiest) debates in food history.
