@bostonglobe: Throughout a 10-hour standoff last month outside a suburban home here, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials had an unwavering objective: to arrest a man who had evaded them that morning and crashed into multiple vehicles, including one of their own. Local, state, and even federal law enforcement partners tried to persuade ICE to stand down, but the agency barreled ahead, provoking a violent confrontation with hundreds of protesters who had surrounded the house where the driver was hiding. The ensuing melee injured protesters and police alike — and put Vermont law enforcement on the defensive over their role in the operation.
