@apexmindspsychotherapy: There’s a moment most people recognize but can’t explain. Someone says something mildly critical and suddenly you’re not a functioning adult. A partner is slightly dismissive and the reaction is way out of proportion to what actually happened. That’s transference. One of the most important ideas in all of psychoanalysis. The unconscious process of responding to people in the present through the emotional lens of your earliest relationships. Your nervous system doesn’t know the difference between then and now. It just recognizes a familiar pattern and responds accordingly. Which means the person in front of you is often getting a reaction that was meant for someone else entirely. The gap between what happened and how it landed is almost always worth paying attention to. If this kind of thing is useful to you follow me for more. I post about psychodynamic psychology and what actually drives human behavior. And if it resonated send it to someone who needs to hear it. #transference #psychoanalysis #relationships #MentalHealth #nyctherapist
The older I get the more and more I realise how much what happens at childhood shapes us throughout our lives.

I am at the “noticing” and acknowledging phase of my journey. But what’s next? I am finally able to notice a lot… but I don’t know what to do with it now that I am noticing.

Thank you for sharing these!!! I try to tell my friends this but I'm really bad at talking about it and making sense, so I'm definitely sharing these with them!!! Noticing this gap has changed my life radically. I wasn't not stubborn, I was re-playing old survival strategies that are no longer necessary--subtle but different!!

Absolutely! I wish we realized these triggers were normal and learn to work through them

I'm curious how therapists differentiate between transference, and ongoing toxic dynamics in relationships, and even trauma reactions? Because I sometimes wonder if they lump everything together in error...

discernment tho is so elusive like what is the proportional response to actual micro aggressions and disrespect ? Second guessing and doubting yourself constantly is exhausting

I feel like the perfect example is reading a text message. there is no tone over text so people will read it in whatever tone they feel.

Sociology/psychology etc has taught me that 90% of people dont even know where their thoughts come from, let alone understand deep concepts of the psyche

Agree and yes this doesn’t get talked about enough, and I find it to be a gift. Pointing us toward our own story and taking account of where it sits in us and why. In the spirit of “yes, and” - both can also be true, which is tricky. This reminds me of the past, yes, and while my reaction is disproportionate - the it exists to carry may OR may not be also useful in the here and now. To be determined when clarity is gained internally. I’ve erred on both sides in the past, and learned the hard way. It’s not one size fits all.
