What you’re seeing is usually Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF₆). Unlike air, this gas is over 5 times denser. Because it’s so heavy, it doesn’t rise or mix. It sinks and pools at the bottom of any container like an invisible liquid.
That’s why a lightweight foil boat can “float” on it. The dense gas pushes back against the object with enough force to support its weight. It’s the same principle as buoyancy in water. The gas molecules are packed so tightly that they create resistance, holding the object up.
It looks like magic or CGI, but it’s just physics. Density determines whether something sinks or floats, and this gas is dense enough to make air feel like a liquid.
