I’ve been in tech for 12 years, this is very true. We are not saving lives. The quarterly goal, projected revenue, deadlines-everything is a conjured up number for which all the employees suffer.

Any efficiency you achieve in tech is just reasons for them to push you harder. There's a never a reward for it, because free time and rest are just seen as loitering. There's never a physical or emotional accounting for pushing yourself beyond your limit.

Tech is not a good industry anymore. Layoffs, 10 times the responsibility for the same pay, RTO, the list goes on and on.

This is the price of promoting technical people into leadership positions over people with actual leadership skills. Part of the skill is maintaining good enough relationships and communication with the next layer of management so that you can work with them to flexibly allocate your team as conditions change. Bad leaders promised a date to their boss and will hit it no matter the human cost; good leaders manage expectations and have targets and fall back options. The dates are always flexible--is your boss willing/able/credible to go to bat for you?

…we need this tomorrow morning. We need you lean in. Brah I’ve been leaning in for 20 years and it’s so much more, do the job of 5 people. Oh here’s AI now you can do the work of 10 people. Oh a bunch of talented people are in the job market so we can easily replace you.

Agreed. The “business” roles are infatuated with Ai because of the speed it promises. It really feeds their insatiable hunger for more at the cost of the engineers who have to make sense of their slop.

In reality AI boosts you like 10 15 percent on complicated projects and we’re pretending it’s 100 times boost. So the goal post is moving much further than what the tech can do for you right now

💯 meaningless deadline after meaningless deadline. It’s funny how humans create fake stress for other humans for no reason.
