It allows you to access government websites, sign documents electronically and deal with Spanish bureaucracy without constantly needing appointments. Once you have one, you’ll use it all the time. You can use it to access Social Security, file taxes, download official documents, check information held by different government departments, sign paperwork electronically and access a huge range of public services online. It can save you a massive amount of time. What surprised me was the renewal cost. When ours came up for renewal, we were quoted over €100 each to renew them. With two adults, those costs add up quickly. Instead, I renewed them myself through my local town hall and it cost absolutely nothing. The new certificates are valid for four years. Now, this won’t necessarily be the same everywhere in Spain and processes can vary depending on your circumstances, but it’s definitely worth checking what options are available before automatically paying someone else to do it for you.
