“If I yelled at everyone…There would be no one left to build community with” ⬅️THIS!! This is what solidarity is about.

Privately spending your hard earned money at any of those establishments is different than being paid exorbitant amounts to actively promote companies like Starbucks etc……

And btw I don’t think I’m better than anyone for my individual choices to boycott. There’s plenty of other companies that I don’t boycott and plenty of other ways I contribute to harm (like eating meat). None of us are going to make perfect decisions and I choose to be compassionate and understanding of our different values rather than angry!!!

As a public servant who has worked in basic needs insecurity on a national scale, if Target is the only option you have, shop at Target. If you live in a food desert, and McDonald's is the only solution, you have to eat. When we know better, we can make strides to do better. For others who don't have access or privilege, they have to do what they can just to survive. We're all living in a capitalistic society with companies that aren't always ethical in their practices.

Being an “influencer” is an optional job though. I understand shopping or working at those stores because they have monopolized the market. Sometimes there isn’t a better option than buying from those companies. However, doing a brand deal for these companies is still very weird to me. At times influencers do feel like the scapegoat for these companies, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t complicit when they take a check and “publicly support” those brands and that choice has consequences. Both things can be true at once. Also, with the amount of money influencers—especially ones that are in the caliber to be sponsored by Starbucks—make from brand deals, I think they will be fine without taking a brand deal from Starbucks. Will I try to cancel someone/cyberbully whoever takes a brand deal from a terrible company? No. Will I engage and support their content? Absolutely not. As a viewer, I value intentionality over opportunism.

I do think there’s a difference between taking a brand deal and shopping at a certain establishment, but the take does make sense!

while i do agree with most of your take, there is a massive difference between indulging in a starbucks drink a few times a week and "influencing" hundreds of thousands to do so. is it a cancellable offense? no, but he still should be held accountable. saying you support certain causes is only valid if your actions support your words

I hard agree with everything you said but what I believe is that as an influencer, saying no to brands bc of their problematic stances IS how someone in an influencer position takes action. That is where his power & influence lies. Cancellation aside. If we have platforms we should use them responsibly and partnering with harmful brands does the opposite

I think there’s a difference between some random person grabbing a Starbucks drink and a person with a huge following having a brand deal and promoting them. I agree that you can’t cancel everyone for not being perfect but an open dialogue with community and accepting responsibility for maybe not making the best decision is also important I think

I think that we are so deep in capitalism that there is no such thing as 100% pure good companies. Sure some are better than others. I think being aware of where you spend your money is ENOUGH. I was an avid target shopper and I was so turned off that I barely go now. His paid partnership is his personal choice but he shouldn’t be upset if people unfollow him!! 😁

If someone is close to me, I will ask them if they know about the ethics of the company and inform them. After that, it is their choice whether or not they continue to shop there. If someone isn’t close to me, I don’t say anything. The idea that we have to be 100% perfect with our shopping is crazy. Majority of these large corporations are at fault anyways. Sometimes, people are aware and they have no choice due to location and finances. There is a ton of different reasons why someone would or would not shop somewhere. Choosing to shop progressively can be a privilege. The more we judge, the less work we get done. Condemning others is just going to create division, not unity.

I'm glad the consensus is I agree with 99% of your take, its unrealistic and sort of chronically online to expect everyone irl to conform to your exact view all the time, but a brand deal is totally different than getting an occasional chicken sandwich. If youre in a position to be taking brand deals from the likes of any of these companies, youre in a position to have a spine and turn it down

Mckenzie having the best takes as always. Maybe it’s because of growing up with social media, but I don’t see a creator taking a brand deal as them supporting that company I see that company is supporting the creator. I would rather those companies support that creator who I share same views with than someone I don’t. Cause let’s be honest Starbucks isn’t going anywhere and if Brandon didn’t take the partnership, it’s not like they wouldn’t then just offer it to someone else. I’m glad that Starbucks is giving money to a creator that I like and is critical of their ethics then choosing to go with someone who ignores it.
