My emotions were so villainized I developed Alexithymia as a result. It’s hugely problematic

i remember when a therapist told me i was a highly sensitive person in my mid 20s i was SOOO offended because my parents had weaponized that word against my sister. so i spent my whole life trying to be tougher, stronger, less emotional etc. it is interesting that being sensitive is viewed as a negative thing, yet being “aware” or “observant” isn’t. i think if it was framed as me being highly attuned i would’ve been more receptive to the idea, because yes i am highly attuned to the people around me and aware of their motivations, and i respond accordingly.

As true as it is that being sensitive is not a bad thing, and is incorrectly villainized, it doesn’t change how sensitive ppl are treated. And if you are too responsive to someone who doesn’t want or can’t handle it, being right doesn’t mean they will ever see themselves as wrong. It is on us each to be the thermostat and not the thermometer (as I saw it put in a video not too long ago).

Parents, complement your kids for sharing their perception! Encourage them and let them know sensitivity is a good thing and if people don’t appreciate their sensitivity, they’re not a real friend. ❤️

I have been trying to see the positive side of being sensitive for years!! You just flipped it in an instant. I looked it up and a synonym of sensitive is perceptive. It’s a positive trait for sure!

the problem isn't being "too sensitive", its not having the tools to process it all!!!

I was told my entire life I was too sensitive, too shy, too quiet. All I learned to do was mask the shit out of every interaction I had, and even masked my own feeling to myself. My 30s have been kicking my ass.

I was always labeled as a sensitive child and I hated how bad people would make me feel about it. Thank you for this, I think it slightly healed something in me

it took so long to unlearn that being sensitive is a bad thing. I've learned to see my sensitivity as a gift that is more of a guide in social settings than a hindrance
