The Galactic Empire vs The Republic: Who comes out on top when a Star Destroyer faces off against a Star Destroyer/Carrier hybrid? The fourth starship comparison profile is here, but this time we’re staying in universe. Two of the most beloved and iconic starships in science fiction, the Venator-class Star Destroyer, primary battleship of the Galactic Republic, and its eventual successor, the Imperial-II Star Destroyer. Two ships that are so similar and yet so very different at the same time. The opening shot of Revenge of the Sith with the battle over Coruscant cemented the Venators place on my top starship list, not just for Star Wars, but for science fiction in general. The style, the sound effects, the scenes, I just love anything the Venator is involved with. The same goes for the Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, if the ship is on screen, then I’m invested in the moment. And the same goes for the Imperial Star Destroyer. Return of the Jedi was my first exposure to Star Wars as a kid, and to this day, the sight of an ISD on screen always has me captivated whether it’s an Imperial I or II. The battle above Scarif from Rogue One is pretty high on the list of my favorite Star Wars moments due heavily to their use in the fight above the planet, and that’s before Darth Vaders arrival from hyperspace or the hallway scene. I knew going in how this situation would likely play out, but I still wanna know what people think would happen if these two ships had to fight it out. Does the Republic have what it takes to take on the ghost of their future? Does their starfighter quantity and variety like the ARC-170 or the V-Wing give them enough of an edge against such overwhelming turbolaser fire? Let me know how the battle goes and what you think!
