Miiiind you we are taught to give holistic care which includes getting enough info to understand a pts background and tailor their care. it’s genuinely upsetting me to the point where I need to apply to medical school or at the very lease NP school

Nobody likes when I get on my soap box about the health literacy gap enforced by poverty and limited health access. We often don’t see patients until they are in the secondary or tertiary phase and it makes me sooo sad .

Those things could mean anything, you shouldn’t assume. The provider should ask what they mean so they clarify because going off assumptions can be risky business.

Whenever I have an inkling there’s low health literacy I make sure to slow right the fuck down and check myself. I make sure they’re heard by their doctors, that their plan is adaptable to their lives as much as possible, and make them feel safe to ask the questions they need. Not saying I don’t do this for all patients but knowing this might be their first doctors visit in YEARS and they’re hospitalized- it’s up to us to make sure they’re given as much education and compassion so that they are not intimidated to come back for more if they need it.
