I believe API is more of a waiter in a restaurant than the menu itself. You place an order which is your request, the waiter takes your order to the kitchen and then comes back with your request. The waiter in this case is the interphase between you and the kitchen.

is security the only reason for soap? suggesting security can't be established with the other 2? given how verbose soap is, rest built well (i.e. securely) seems like a better, or at least comparable option.
