I'm so tired of learning on my own and of the whole "noone else can help you but yourself" and "self-made person" culture. On my own I've tried learning how to draw, how to do metalworking, I'm studying for my phd exam in social psychology on my own with just a list of books, where i will get accepted if i have a project i have made up and started by myself, I've tried learning spanish, philosophy, anything related to home improvement, gardening and so on, all in my free time after work. It's like moving in quicksand while also knowing that if there was someone to show me at least the basics i would be 10 times more efficient in my learning. And everyone pretends that this is how things should be.

genuinely, reading academic literature is so hard for someone who hasn't been indulged in the sciences and maths. I was a sophomore and asked my prof for resources and he gave me academic papers. I LOVE reading. I genuinely LOVE reading. The moment I read the resources, I felt like I was just watching words without understanding them. Yes, the information is free, but I didn't know how to understand what those combination of words meant at first. I had to keep reading and I eventually got it. If he had taught me to actually read it, I would've understood it by the 2nd time I read it; but no, he just mocked me and told me to keep reading.

never heard of survivorship bias but I'm glad to have a term for it. it's such a common argument against many kinds of social supports, that some people manage to do without them and be okay. and it's just so unfair and makes so little sense

a story of mine that comes to mind while listening to this is that I played a sport for over 14 years, I learnt in my 12th year playing I was using a fundamental skill wrong, I discovered this myself when coaching a younger group, all of the practice I had done around this skill was off and no one had corrected, just one person telling me would’ve changed so much

That’s why AI is so good at helping you learn new stuff IF you know the right questions go ask

I always wondered why when I worked one on one with students they finally understood what I had just said to the whole classroom. Didn’t realize that there was research on it.

I feel like this is why ai has been so popular because it specifically gives you feedback 😭 I don't like how much wastage and resources it drains though

I teach discrete math at university level. And you would be surprised by the differences between teaching it in French vs English. Because the way a student learn terms create a mental image that is triggered by different words or different concepts. This mean adapting how you cover subjects based on the academic cursus of the students

in skating this can be a double edged sword because some people know how to do a trick but can't transfer that information to anyone and its very frustrating getting feedback from them coz every fail or shin knock hurts like hell

We explicitly followed Blooms Taxonomy of Learning in gr 4-8 for each class, and looking back I was most engaged in my learning in those years. I love Bloom!

I agree with this, but at the same time, I'm also seeing a rise in people expecting or sometimes even feeling entitled that other random people mouth feed them with the exact information they want—refusing to challenge themselves to learn or research on their own. Not everyone will be able to provide you with all the resources for certain subjects all the time. The ability to learn and research are skills we all need that we shouldn't always expect to be able to outsource that to random people. How do we as a society progress if we are entirely reliant on the biased/incomplete information passed onto us by random people without knowing how to do any proper research on our own?

i want to learn more for my career progression but have no idea how. i can just go to the library and read about it but have no idea what to read. so i have chosen to further study, surround myself with like-minded people and people with more knowledge (the prof) 🤭
