@the_construction_mentor: Why every construction pro should know how to schedule in MS Project or P6 🚧📅 Knowing how to build a dependable schedule in Microsoft Project or Primavera P6 lets you plan realistic timelines, spot risks early, allocate resources properly, set baselines, and communicate priorities to your team and stakeholders… so projects finish on time and budget. Quick definition: What is the critical path? The critical path is the longest sequence of dependent tasks that determines the project’s earliest possible finish date. Tasks on the critical path have no slack/float…any delay to them delays the whole project. How to identify the critical path in Microsoft Project (step-by-step) 1. Build your schedule first: - Enter all tasks, realistic durations, and link them with dependencies (FS, SS, FF, etc.). - Set the project start date and proper calendars (project & resource calendars). - Avoid unnecessary constraints; use Finish/Start links where possible. 2. Save a baseline (Project > Set Baseline) so you can track changes and variances. 3. Open the Gantt Chart view (View > Gantt Chart) — this is where the critical path is easiest to spot. 4. Highlight critical tasks: - On the Format tab, check “Critical Tasks.” Critical bars will be colored (usually red). - Or apply the Critical filter: View > Filter > Critical to show only critical tasks. 5. Inspect slack/float: - Insert a Total Slack (or Total Float) column: right‑click a column header > Insert Column > type “Total Slack” (or “Total Float”). - Tasks with 0 (or negative) total slack are on the critical path — any delay on them delays project finish. 6. Use the Network Diagram (View > Network Diagram) for a clear visual of the path — critical tasks are usually highlighted. 7. (Optional) If you need to see multiple critical paths, enable the option in Project’s settings (Options → Schedule → calculate multiple critical paths). 8. Confirm and manage: once identified, protect critical tasks — add contingency, prioritize resources, and monitor them closely during execution. Good content. Curious if anyone else avoids SS + lags unless absolutely necessary. I see them create more scheduling problems than they solve, and I never trust leveling without reviewing every change it makes.
