in Polish we use word "Wakacje" (Vah-cah-tsyeah) which is an exact translation of the word "Vacation" but we also have "Ferie" (Feh-r-yeah) which usually is a week off from school in February, there's also "Majówka" (Mayoovkah) but that's specifically like 2 day holiday in May, Wakacje is usually the term we use for when we're going on holiday/vacation

The Swedish usage comes from the french military where officers were entities to 6 months off duty called ”congé de semestre” basically meaning six months off. the first part was then dropped and the word semestre came to mean time off which was then borrowed as a loan word into Swedish.
