@doc4heart: I’m Dr. Michael Richman, a double board certified cardiothoracic surgeon. In today’s video, I’m going to share why too much calcium supplement intake is associated with heart attack and stroke in postmenopausal women. I will highlight the most up-to-date evidence from randomized control trials and tell you what you can do to minimize the risk! For more information, guidance, advocacy, or a consultation you can go to my website at www.paladinmds.com #calcium #menopause #heartattack #stroke #womenshealth
I guess this would include chewable antacids like Tums?

Why can’t everyone just get on the same page. Life in perimenopause and menopause is hard enough without every doctor giving you contradictory information.

Well, that sucks. My doctor recommended I take 1200 mg of calcium every day several years ago. And I’ve been doing that every day. Now I’m gonna drop down to 600. Hope I didn’t do too much damage already.

My doctor has said not to bother with calcium supplements as long as I’m eating a balanced diet and incorporate some dairy into my diet

Yep, have heard this from my PCP. She told me to eat my calcium in food vs supplements as well. Curious how fortified foods (macadamia nut milk fortified with calcium to be specific) fits into this. Thoughts?

Yes! I tell my patients the American Heart Association guidance for no more than 500 mg of calcium supplementation a day and that is mainly for my patients who can’t eat dairy and are in peri/post menopause.👌

don’t take more than 600 mg of calcium supplement per day, or don’t exceed 600 mg total calcium from all sources
