The law is often described as equal for everyone, yet reality tells a different story. Across history, the people who have caused the greatest suffering were rarely the ones sleeping in prison cells. A starving man who steals food is treated as a criminal, while those who manipulate economies, fuel wars, exploit millions, or profit from corruption frequently remain protected by wealth, influence, and status. Society tends to punish visible crimes while overlooking respectable ones. The poor steal because they have too little; the powerful often steal because nothing is ever enough. One leaves fingerprints on a crime scene, the other leaves signatures on documents. Yet only one is likely to wear handcuffs. Justice may hold a scale, but power has always had a hand resting on it. Perhaps that is why people lose faith in institutions long before institutions collapse. They notice that punishment often falls hardest on those with the least ability to defend themselves, while those responsible for larger harms hide behind legal language, political influence, and public relations. The tragedy is not merely corruption itself, but the normalization of it. When society begins to expect dishonesty from its leaders, injustice stops being a scandal and becomes a tradition. And in that moment, prisons cease to represent justice and instead become reminders of an uncomfortable truth: that the difference between a criminal and a respected figure is sometimes not the amount of harm they caused, but the amount of power they possessed while causing it.
