A bit more about Rano Raraku. The moai right in front is one of several that were excavated by archaeologists which is in part why they know how big they are. There are about 300 moai around what called the quarry, all in various stages of creation before being abandoned some time in the 1600s. Some were still in their initial stages of being chiseled out of the volcanic rock, others like the ones buried upright were having their finer details completed and many are just scattered all over the place in various stages of being broken. Look up the Moai Road. Here's a timeline for context. 1100–1200 AD – The first moai were carved. 1200–1500 AD – The height of moai production and ahu (platform) construction. 1500–1600 AD – Some of the largest statues, including those at Ahu Tongariki, were erected. 1600–1680 AD – Carving and transport of new moai ceased. Many unfinished statues remained in the quarry at Rano Raraku. 17th–18th centuries – Rivalries and social upheaval led to the toppling of many standing moai and a shift toward the Birdman (Tangata Manu) cult centered at Orongo. #ranoraraku #rapanui #easterisland #moai
