There are two kinds of grief. One kind of grief arises from hopelessness and helplessness—a grief in which no ray of hope remains. This is, in reality, the grief referred to in the verse: “So that you may not grieve over what has escaped you.” When someone loses a loved one and becomes completely helpless, he may spend his entire life weeping, yet the one who has departed cannot be brought back. God has already forbidden this kind of grief. Therefore, a believer does not grieve in this manner. It is this kind of grief that consumes a person’s health. Mothers weep until they lose their eyesight, and their hearts are consumed by sorrow. But there is another kind of grief which, instead of harming one’s health, actually contributes to its preservation—or, one might say, is necessary for maintaining one’s health. When nervous tension builds up, when extremely frightening and painful things are being said from every direction, when people whom one is prepared to sacrifice one’s life for are being insulted, and one finds oneself completely helpless—in such a situation, if a person does not grieve, he may be destroyed by that grief. If he forcibly suppresses himself, refuses to let his tears flow, decides that he must do nothing, and tries to force himself to laugh, he may become a nervous patient; he may even lose his sanity. It is possible that such people may eventually begin contemplating or committing suicide. Therefore, when grief, in the way of God, gives a person the opportunity to shed tears, all the tension within the nature is released. The person emerges from prayer refreshed, with a lighter and more peaceful heart and body. Thus, to regard that grief which is actually a mercy as a hardship is a great misunderstanding. When grief is transformed into prayer, it becomes a mercy. When it relieves nervous tension, it becomes a mercy. But there is one essential condition: this grief must be channelled only into the way of God. It must not be turned into personal retaliation or worldly action. It must not be allowed to become impatience, nor must it be allowed to turn into despair. Maintain complete and perfect faith, and then see how great a mercy this grief becomes—for you and for the entire Community.
