@mateenq2: Concrete members end up cracked all the time but it usually takes a structural engineer or inspector to determine whether the crack is an issue or not. In this case the concrete beam has formed some shear cracks which is a brittle failure mode and likely needs to be monitored. #engineering #construction #structuralengineering #civilengineering #engineeringstudent
To those saying it’s a small crack and prob fine - shear failure, unlike flexural failure, tends to be sudden and catastrophic. So when you see small cracks forming in this telltale pattern (emanating from bearing shear), it should make you worry a bit

Prestressed concrete is in fact designed to crack

Generally, cracks up to about 0.3–0.4 mm are considered acceptable, depending on the design requirements.
I work in this field and perform calculations related to concrete stresses and crack behavior. There are essentially two cases to consider: concrete in the cracked state and in the uncracked state.
When casting large concrete structures, cracks are often unavoidable due to shrinkage and other effects. This is inherent to concrete, especially in larger elements.
However, these cracks do not appear typical and should be inspected. They resemble the behavior of concrete in the final stage of failure.

How do you fix this? Tearing down each cross beam one at a time, while propping up the bridge, or is there a better way?

Can we safely assume because someone patched a crack that engineers are closely monitoring the situation?
