Susie Dent did a thing on this - in order to get in the dictionary the word or phrase has to have been used in a published document. Because so much of his work has survived it was a “lazy” way to credit things in the early days. So they were possibly in common use or written in earlier texts that haven’t survived. Doesn’t make his use of language any less amazing, or that these phrases are way older than we think, or that they’ve survived because he used them and his writing has endured.
