And if you have severe anxiety/ trauma and can't do it, speak to your doctor about getting it done in an appropriate way. You have a long time to prepare in the waiting room.

I personally do my mental prep in the waiting room and assumed everyone else did too

All I need is to lie down or I’ll pass out. I hate it, it’s embarrassing, I am embarrassed to ask the nurses to lie me down to draw my blood but I do it because I don’t want to ruin everyone’s day by dropping.

I get anxious around needles but I have to get my blood drawn all the time. I’m gonna be anxious at one minute or 5 minutes. So I just don’t look and deep breathe through it like a grown up

I’ve got a phobia of needles that I’m fully aware is irrational. When it came time to get my Covid jag I just asked to lie down and look the other way and we all got on with it.

Would it not make sense to come in earlier and mentally prepare in the waiting room.?

My adult son has autism, epilepsy, and intellectual disabilities and I know that getting his blood drawn is a horrible ordeal for all concerned. So I call the lab and ask them what their slowest time is, and that’s when we go. With the assistance of some Valium taken ahead of time as well, and extra people with me to help. Otherwise, it is dangerous not only for him but for the nice ladies at the lab! If we can make it work, the person who drove themselves to the lab can.

While I do recognize that healthcare has times like this (as a healthcare worker) I can also work with people who struggle with things like this to make them more comfy in these situations rather than rushing them into something. The harder you push the longer these things can take

I got over my fear of needles by just doing it and pretending like I wasn't scared

if your anxiety is severe(to the point where you may be a danger to self/others in a healthcare setting) you may be able to arrange to have blood drawn at home by a district nurse or you can choose a private service. For example in the UK blue horizon will do a home visit for £55( not including actual test costs)

If you want all the time in the world to be ready for a procedure at the moment you are actually ready instead of being scheduled for, people are gonna have to pay for a standby whatever or get used to really long wait times where they might not be seen for 1+ hrs sometimes. Which I doubt will ever happen enmass because in my experience, people hate having to wait

As someone who’s terrified of needles the idea of wanting to be there for five more minutes than necessary is so insane. Just distract me by talking about what movie you just saw and we’re good. I want out.

I will let you stick me as soon as I come in, but I’m also a fainter and I’m SO SORRY for that… I will give a warning whenever I’m ready to go out but I feel so guilty

So interesting to hear how things are in different places, our province bloodwork you have to book a scheduled time. I think it’s a much better system, staff knows how many people are coming and patients know when to expect things.

I agree. If you have a condition that requires special circumstances for the blood draw usually it’s documented and you could make other arrangements. I know this because my daughter is on the spectrum and unfortunate has hashimotos. She has to have her blood drawn frequently to test her levels and she’s also been notoriously anxious about needles. Her options were take a sedative and always go to children’s hospital or figure out strategies to address it. She chose the latter because she doesn’t like taking more medications and she doesn’t want to be incapable of caring for her health using standard medical facilities after she turns 18. She uses a stress ball, focused breathing, and just generally has had an easier time getting through it since she’s had to have six draws in the past five months. Sure, not everyone can overcome everything but it’s in our best interest to try rather than by default give up

I’m terrible with getting my bloods done, like awful (injections fine, IVs fine, just bloods). I don’t know how to describe the feeling it gives me, but it’s almost like my body is physically trying to expel the needle out. Saying that though, I get on with it. I buy numbing cream if needed, focus on recalling random facts or talking to myself (in my head) about my day. Whatever it takes. Thankfully my mum was a phlebotomist and can do it for me, but even before that I was so conscious of not wasting anyone’s time. It’s my job to cope as an adult. I love phlebotomists, they’re so lovely and when i’ve mentioned the whole “if i start going faint don’t worry about me”, they’ll attempt to distract me throughout it. Not their problem in my eyes, but they do make it as easy as possible for me. Bit of a ramble, but my overall thought is just “make it as easy as you can on your healthcare providers, treat them with the kindness you should show to everyone”, and all the other things that should be extremely obvious!!
