Mount Kailash rises to 6,638 meters (21,778 ft) and has never been summited. Not because it can’t be climbed but because it is considered sacred by millions. Climbing it is forbidden. Gangkhar Puensum, at 7,570 meters (24,836 ft), is the highest unclimbed mountain on Earth. Located in Bhutan, mountaineering above 6,000 meters has been banned for decades. No one has reached its summit. Even Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain on the planet, carries a different kind of rule. Climbers stop just below the true summit out of respect for local spiritual beliefs. And then there are peaks like Muchu Chhish and Karjiang I. Remote. Technical. Unpredictable. Still unsummited. Not all mountains are challenges to conquer. Some are boundaries. Some are protected.
