I recently inherited a 2010 Chevy Express 1500 from my grandfather. It has 60k miles on it. About 200 miles after I started driving it I lost 3rd and 4th gears. (4L60e things) Couldn’t imagine losing her and I’m about to graduate my community college’s tech program, so I rebuilt it myself during class! Couldn’t imagine letting this thing go. I got picked up from first grade in this thing. I’m 21 now. Just took it off our transmission dyno yesterday!

5k in labour probably 2-3k in parts so 8k roughly vs 50k plus for a new vehicle. yea which sounds cheaper to you

I try and keep my cars as long as possible. I'd rather pay 5gs to fix whatever it needs than put 5k down and have payment for 7 to 8 years.

Can you replace it for price to fix it, almost always is no, especially with car prices today

I agree whole-heartedly...I wish I could have kept a few cars...but I had to junk them bc I didn't have the money to fix....but was heartbreaking for me

That’s the 1st thing I ask, does it have sentimental value?

thing is, if someone learns to fix their own car, for most cars its way more economical to fix than buy any of the new shit coming off lots today if you dont have to worry about labour rates

Anything 1998 through 2012. Absolutely fix it. Anything after that is probably not worth fixing.

Been dumping money into my late grandpas 2014 gmc sierra. I bought it outright from my grandma so she could get what it’s worth and not just give it to me. Problem after problem and I will continue to fix them as they come. He loved this truck and I’ll do the same

You know it is not often we hear a mechanic say sentimental value is worth it… If you were in my area I would drive well over an hour to have you work on my car

That’s how my Charger is to me. I will always take care of it because it’s my best friend’s car. I’ll never sell it.

My 1991 Ford Ranger is a good example. Needs a ton of work ( A4LD transmission puked in the driveway, valve covers leak, AC, etc) and I'm still debating whether to get it fixed, but may give up, as I can't find a reman'd transmission. My first new car.
