![The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack carried out by the Imperial Japanese Navy against the United States Navy's Pacific Fleet which was anchored at Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii, on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. This attack triggered direct United States involvement in World War II. The attack began at around 07:38 am Hawaii time. The United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was attacked by at least 353 fighters, bombers and torpedo launchers from the Japanese Navy, in 2 waves of attacks, which were dispatched from 6 Japanese Navy aircraft carriers.It was recorded that 8 US battleships suffered serious damage, of which 4 were sunk. All of these battleships, apart from the USS Arizona, could later be raised and repaired, and 6 of them could serve again and be deployed in a number of battles in World War II. Japan also sank or damaged 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers, 1 anti-aircraft training ship, and 1 minelayer. This attack also resulted in 188 United States aircraft being damaged or destroyed, and resulting in 2,403 fatalities and 1,178 injuries.[8] However, a number of facilities such as important base installations, power plants, shipyards, maintenance facilities, fuel oil storage facilities, torpedo storage facilities, submarine docks and base headquarters buildings were not attacked. On the other hand, Japan 'only' lost 29 aircraft, 5 mini-submarines and 65 personnel. Apart from that, it was recorded that 1 Japanese Navy sailor, namely Kazuo Sakamaki, was captured by the US. After this event, Japan declared war on the United States and began its military campaign in the Greater Asia-Pacific.
