It's against the rules to catch a ball with anything other than your hand or glove. So while it was an accident, the batter is awarded first base because the pitched "broke a rule"

It's not a catch if ball gets caught in clothing. MLB rules are clear that this would be a hit and the batter along with any base-runners get 2 bases.
