100% a tactical choice. I’m trained in classical choir and musical theatre so I have *some* knowledge of this. The lack of jaw movement forces the singer to use more air from the lungs while singing — normally, when a singer needs to reach a higher/stronger note, they’ll need to drop their jaw further to allow more air to pass through, thereby allowing more “noise” to pass through. I think Joji uses this as a way to “cry out” without being loud — since if you were to try and achieve these notes WITHOUT falsetto, you’d be belting them, and it would drastically change the tone of the song.
