The author, JD Salinger uses Holden's past and present memories to shape his existentialism that eventually makes him leave school before his parents get the letter that he's kicked out. The whole reason why Holden leaves is because of the events of existentialism that cause him to do so. For example he mentions that the people around him are phony and when he realizes that he succumbed to phoniness so he takes back control by leaving the school in hopes of breaking the system of being like everyone else. He obviously doesn't want to be like everyone else as hes not like them, gets good grades and good faith in their religion, so why stays there longer when he comes somewhere where there is a better chance of him being himself. He wants to be authentic himself with him in control and when an outside force that is out of his control takes places then that only makes him want to be himself more. His brother is the ultimate reason why he tries to find his true purpose since the death of his brother, Holden has lost confinement himself as he meant a lot to him and he hated how he couldn't control the outcome of his cancer therefore makes him more hungry for change. He missed his brother so when his roommate, Stradalter asked him to write a composition he decided to make it about his late brother’s gloves as they connect him to his childhood and his innocence as now more than ever he felt a greater distance between it. Stradlater, not understanding how much Allie meant to Holden, heavily criticizes the work saying how it's too sentimental to what the theme of the composition is supposed to be. Holden starts to get mad as he felt like he poured his personal emotions into the composition, And on top of that while writing the composition, straddle goes out with a girl he cares deeply about if not like, and Stradalter says little to nothing about how it went which made Holden more furious. This is bad faith as Holden had no problem with Stradalter going on dates with other girls with the intentions that he has, but as soon as it's someone he likes then it's a problem. Of course this changes Holden's fate as the person he likes is now in the hands of someone else, Holden
